Dachshunds - Are They the Right Dog for You?

Dachshunds - Are They the Right Dog for You?

Think a Dachshund is the perfect dog for you?

If you want a small dog that is loyal, comical, entertaining, makes a keen watchdog, and needs only moderate exercise, then a Dachshund may be the perfect dog for you!

The Dachshund is a short-legged, long-bodied dog breed belonging to the hound family. The standard size dachshund was bred to scent, chase, and flush out badgers and other burrow-dwelling animals, while the miniature dachshund was developed to hunt smaller prey such as rabbits.

Dachshunds are especially prone to having back problems. This may be due to genetics, moving the wrong way, falling or jumping on and off furniture.  Dog stairs are recommended for Dachshunds to decrease strains on their back and legs.

I have a 2yr old miniature dachshund named toula jolie that im madly in love with. She has me trained very well. I exist to rub her belly and cup her snout all day long. I get the belly rubbing but she forces me to cup her snout and that keeps me “shaking my head” but i continue to indulge her.

I have epilepsy. For the last fifteen years I had a Pomeranian service dog that recently passed away in June of 2017. I adopted an eight-week-old long haired female dachshund. She always comes up to me and smells my ear not sure what that’s all about but she loves to cuddle up with me at night. Everywhere I go she goes. The only disadvantage so far that I see is she gets car sick. I need a service dog who will be able to warn me before I am going to have a seizure so I won’t be behind the wheel of a vehicle, around any dangerous equipment or in any dangerous places. Other than that she’s been a very good companion.

I adopted our Maggie May when she was 2- 1/2 yrs old. Maggie May had Heart worm and Whip worm when i got the little girl, Maggie was treated for the Heart worm and Whip worm and also chipped. I took her right to my Vet, Mags had no fat, no mussel, just skin and bones, took her back in a month and she was getting mussel back, Vet was very surprised and happy, His name was Dr. Conrad at [ Sunset Point Animal Hospital Clearwater, Florida. Maggie May came down with Heart disease but, she went longer then normal, she had almost passed 2 or 3 times, we thought she was a goner but, the girl came back each time and was with us another year 1- 1/2 yrs then had a seizure and knew she was not right,[ the Vet in Newburgh area knew it may not be long] so took her the next day and we had to have her go to Heaven. Maggie Mays heart was twice the size a few mo’s before but our girl gave all she had to be with my Husband and I and she was sooooo loved and she gave it right back and more. Maggie May did not have a mean bone in her body, she liked big dogs Grey hounds, Rotties, not so much sm dogs, she was just a wonderful baby and it has been hard to deal with her passing. Maggie Jumped and did things that she wanted, i didn’t stop her and glad i didn’t stop her, she had a happy life with lots of LOVE, she took my heart with her and my Husbands as well. we will never find another Maggie May, she lived to 13 years old and we miss her every day. Thank You for reading my message about our Beautiful Maggie May, she is LOVED Forever.

I wanted to add Maggie May was 13 yrs, old when she passed, I don’t think she wanted to leave us and thought she was with us longer the possible, she had some close calls and then would be back with us, we cryed like babies and then she would perk back up and then and get her second wind if that is what you can call it, that was our girl Little Miss Maggie May, She was funny, she would protect me while in the car, people could be a block away they not supposed to be there in her mind, when i got out no barking or growing. She slept in our bed hogged the biggest part of the bed, my Husband told her their wouldn’t be any more babies, Ha Ha right. We would never have any thing but a Doxie, Mags is our Love Foe Ever, she is our Heart Mags has been gone since Sept, 2018, Marge and Richie, she will be in our Hearts forever, so very special my Maggie May.

I had my Doxie Maggie May since she was 2 years old. I adopted her from a shelter [ Pinellas County ] n Florida. She had Heartworm and Whipworm was just Skin and Bones when i got my baby Maggie May. we took her out of her kennel to visit with her and she was lovely calm. I took her home with me but, first to my Vets so i had everything strait so she would get well and she did, muscle coming back in a month. She was a low key Doxie and she didn"t mind staying n bed with Mom was tired. Maggie May was best little girl ever, smart as a whip and new what i was saying to her, i could read her and she could read me, she would talk and get across what she wanted or needed. she had allergies which bothered her ears, showed her teeth and made a strange face and noise but made herself clear and i learned a lot from her. She was no problem in any way, liked big dogs and wanted to play with them. I know i will never have another Doxie like Maggie May,so gentle and sweet. I lost our Maggie May to Heart decease, heart was twice the size or larger when she passed. I had her put to sleep in my arms, i lost part of myself that day and still hurts today. My Maggie May is gone and my heart with her. My Husband took it very hard as well. I have had Shelties 7 at one time and a Pot Belly pig which though he was a dog, They were wonderful but, Maggie was so special she ran away with my HEART. I know this is to long and not be published, but i had my Little Love Maggie May. Thank You for Listening. Marjorie Weintraub

I am 71 years old .My current dachshund is a 9year old black red mix about 15 lbs. I have owned my dachshund since I was 3years old. They have been my constant companions, helped me raise 2 daughter’s and 4 grandsons. Sweet tempered, loyal ,friendly to all. They are the best companions in the world for me.This is probably my last dog,I would not trade any of my little friends for anything.

I have had 7 Dachshunds and 4 have passed on but I have 3 left. Skittles is my pride and joy and she turned 15 this past December. She was the mother to 2 others I had. Annie and Copper were her babies and Annie was 11 when I lost her, Copper was 8 when I lost him. Betsy and Willie were the 1st ones I had. The last one is Cinnamon, she is so sweet and loving. They all were cuddle bugs and excellent watchdogs. They were my children once my children grew up. They are very social and do better in pairs. Over all I personally love my Doxies. I have h ad Boxers and a Mastiff, but none compare. I loved my others but Doxies will be my forever choice. I have have the great joy to babysit my son’s little guy Bo. He is a standard long haired Chocolate Doxie. My kids say I am obsessed with them.

I have two long haired dachshunds they said they were many but the little girl weighs 15 lb and the little boy weighs 17 and a half so that to me means they are tweenies. They are rescues and I adopted him from the Humane Society. They are brother and sister and are full blood doxies. They are amazing. I would have others again if something should happen to these however I pray that does not happen. They are amazing extremely smart and they were extremely easy to potty train I did not have any trouble whatsoever they sleep through the night unless of course they hear noises and you are right they are great Watch Dogs. They are such a blessing I am so in love with my puppies and so thankful for them.

I absolutely love my dachshunds beagle mix. She sleeps under the covers right beside me. She follows me everywhere I go unless she can see me. She “bathes me”. So she treats me like I am the same as her. She also let’s me know when my diabetes is high.she loves other dogs and cats. She is gentle with small children and loves everybody. Everyone wants her. Never want any other dog.

We have 3 mini dachshunds. They are hilarious when trying to get each other to play. The 3 of them all like to hunt and dig. Have never had a doxie with back problems. Our oldest one is 14 and still going strong. They are so affectionate and entertain us. They are very wary of strangers and are good watch dogs. We love these little dogs and having more than one, we don’t worry when we go out as they have each other for company. Love love love them
